In order to evaluate the use of oilseeds in the diet of goat kids, two experiments were performed. Experimental treatments consisted of four different total mixed diets, all containing oat hay, ground corn, soybean meal and mineral supplement, and differing in oilseeds inclusion (dry matter basis), according to the treatments: 1) control (without oilseeds), 2) diet containing 7.87% flaxseed, 3) diet with 7.30% sunflower seed, and 4) diet containing 8.00% canola. In the first experiment (to evaluate the performance), 28 ¾ Boer + ¼ Saanen castrated goat kids (22.66 kg to 30.88 kg BW) were allotted in a randomized design in feedlot. There was no difference between treatments for intake of dry matter, organic matter, crude protein and ether extract, total... |

Physical (pH, color, tenderness, and cooking weight loss), chemical (moisture, crude protein, ash, and lipids) and sensory (odor, flavor, juiciness, and overall acceptance) characteristics of meat from Santa Inês lambs slaughtered with 2.0, 3.0, and 4.0 mm of subcutaneous fat thickness (SFT) were evaluated. Samples of the longissimus dorsi muscles were removed from 24 male uncastrated lambs distributed in a completely randomized design with three treatments and eight replicates. Weightings and ultrasound evaluations were performed every 14 days. No significant differences were observed for pH0h, which averaged 6.24. Lambs slaughtered with 4.0 mm SFT differed from the treatments with 2.0 and 3.0 mm as to the pH24h values. The meat from lambs slaughtered... |

ABSTRACT Reserve mobilization in seeds occurs after visible germination, which is marked by the protrusion of the radicle or cotyledonary petiole, as in species of Arecaceae. Acrocomia aculeata (macaw palm), usually produces hard seeds whose endosperm has mannan-rich cell walls. We investigated the composition of storage compounds in macaw palm seed and the roles of two enzymes (endo-β-mannanase, α-galactosidase) during and after germination. The seeds were firstly submitted to pre-established protocol to overcome dormancy and promote germination. Enzyme activity in both embryo and endosperm were assayed from the initiation of germinative activities until leaf sheath appearance, and the status of seed structures and reserve compounds were evaluated.... |

Three practical isoproteic (54% protein) diets were formulated to contain graded levels of crude fat (diet L: 10%, diet M: 20% and diet H: 30%). Each diet was assigned unrestrictedly to three and restrictedly to two replicate groups of fish (IBW 243 g). In unrestricted groups, increasing the dietary lipid level led to a significant decrease in voluntary feed intake without affecting growth rate. In the feed-restricted groups, daily growth rates increased with increasing dietary fat levels. There was a significant and inverse effect of the dietary fat content on whole body moisture and fat levels, with highest lipid (ca. 20%) and lowest moisture (ca. 58%) contents in sea bass fed diet containing the highest lipid level; muscle lipid concentration was... |

Pacific oyster hatchery production remains highly variable, partially due to inconsistent gamete quality. However, little attention has been paid to oocyte quality in Pacific oyster compared to important vertebrate aquaculture species such as fishes. The aims of the present study were to identify criteria of oocyte and trochophore quality used as predictive tools for embryo developmental success at the D-larval stage. Twenty-six potential proxies of oocyte and trochophore quality were studied on 25 mature females, as determined using histology. Some morphological and biochemical characteristics of mature oocytes were described. Protein appeared to be the main constituent of fully mature Pacific oyster oocytes. Neutral lipids accounted for 61% of the total... |

A work was carried out with the purpose of verifying the biochemical changes associated to soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) seeds osmoconditioning. Seeds of the UFV 10, IAC 8 and Doko RC cultivars harvested at R8 development stage and submitted to different treatments were used. The biochemical evaluations were performed during seed storage, after the hydration-dehydration process. Initially, seeds were osmoconditioned in a polyethylene glycol (PEG 6000) solution, with the osmotic potential of -0.8 MPa and 20ºC, for a period of four days. After that, seeds were dried back until the initial moisture content (10-11%) and stored in natural conditions for three and six months. Two controls were used: untreated seeds (dry seeds) and water soaked seeds. Seed... |

Red drum larvae were fed from day 11 to day 24 post-hatch, with Artemia (LP group) or two isoproteinic-formulated diets with varying lipid levels, 15% (L15 group) and 30% (L30 group). The lipid fraction was composed of a mixture of cod liver oil and soy lecithin. Larvae fed Artemia exhibited the greatest length, L30 diet induced a larvae length significantly greater than that obtained with L15 diet (P < 0,05). No difference was observed in larvae survival among the three dietary groups. The increase in dietary lipid concentration led to an increase in amylase and trypsin secretion levels in 24-day-old larvae. The pancreatic secretion level measured in L30 group was close to that of LP group, suggesting that the maturation of the pancreatic functions was... |

Enzymatic hydrolysis of sardine viscera by three broad spectrum proteases was investigated using the pHstat method (24 h, pH 8, 50 degrees C). After hydrolysis, three fractions (sludge, aqueous phase and oily phase) were collected. For each fraction, lipids and phospholipids were quantified and molecular weights of aqueous phase peptides were determined. Under these conditions, the degree of hydrolysis (DH) varied from 1.9% (Flavourzyme), 3.1% (Protamex) and to 3.3% (Alcalase). Dry matter distribution indicated that all hydrolysis performed increased solubilisation of proteins: protein recovery for each hydrolysis ranged from 57.4% to 61.2%. Furthermore, the total lipid content in the liquid parts (oily and aqueous phases) increased (at least 85% of lipids... |

Rauwolfia vomitoria (RV) has potent sedative effect, which may result in severe unpleasant consequences if not controlled. This necessitated this study on the effect of Gongronema latifolium (GL) on RV-induced behaviour, biochemical activities, and histomorphology of the cerebral cortex. Eighteen male Wistar rats of average weight 266 g were grouped into three (13). Group 1 was the control administered 0.5 mL of Tween®20, while groups 2 and 3 were administered 150 mg/kg of RV, and a combination of 150 mg/kg of RV and 200 mg/kg of GL (RV+GL), respectively for seven days. Twelve hours after treatments, open field neurobehavioral test was carried-out and the animals euthanized. Their sera were analyzed, and their cerebral cortices routinely processed by... |

The present study was conducted to clarify the difference in the color of the cytoplasm in immature follicular oocytes from prepubertal and adult minke whales. The four lipid contents (triglyceride, total cholesterol phospholipids and non-esterified fatty acids) in vitrified immature oocytes from prepubertal and adult minke whales, and also in fresh and vitrified immature porcine oocytes, were measured. The lipid contents in vitrified-warmed minke whale oocytes were similarly high compared with those in vitrified-warmedp orcine oocytes. In particular, the total cholesterol and phospholipid contents in the vitrified immature oocytes from prepubertal and adult minke whales were significantly( P<0.05) higher than those from prepubertal pigs. Furthermore,the... |

Understanding microalgal lipid accumulation under nitrogen starvation is of major interest for biomass feedstock, food and biofuel production. Using a domesticated oleaginous algae Tisochrysis lutea, we performed the first comparative proteomic analysis on the wild type strain and a selected lipid over-accumulating mutant. 2-DE analysis was made on these strains cultured in two metabolic conditions, with and without nitrogen deprivation, which revealed significant differences in proteomes according to both strain and nitrogen availability. Mass spectrometry allowed us to identify 37 proteins that were differentially expressed between the two strains, and 17 proteins regulated by nitrogen starvation concomitantly with lipid accumulation. The proteins... |

The combined effects of feeding time (morning and evening) and dietary fat concentration on feed intake, growth, body composition and lipid tissue distribution were examined in rainbow trout fed on demand. To that purpose, diets with low (LE, 6% lipid) or high energy concentrations (HE, 24% lipid) were used in four treatments that combined provision of the same (HE-HE or LE-LE) or different (HE-LE, LE-HE) diets at morning and evening meals. Digestible energy intakes of the LE-HE (229 U kg(-1) d(-1)) and HE-HE (269 U kg(-1) d(-1)) groups were significantly different. There was no significant difference in the amount of energy intake between the two meals of the day in any of the treatments. The main effect of dietary treatment was on lipid intake; fish in... |

In this paper, biochemical and physiological analyses were used to characterize changes associated with mortality event occurred during veliger development of American oyster, Crassostrea virginica. Biochemical analyses included the evaluation of lipid classes, fatty acid composition and total protein content. Larval physiology was evaluated by studying feeding activity, enzymes related to energy metabolism, oxidative stress levels and enzymatic antioxidant defenses. These analyses were complemented by bacterial community analyses as well as by measuring larval oyster performance. We observed that mortality events coincided with (1) strong changes in the surrounding bacterial community; (2) a progressive decrease in feeding activity; (3) higher levels of... |

Our study evaluated how the consumption of diets with low (LOW group - 0.4/1) or high (CON group - 13.6/1) omega-6/omega-3 ratio across generations (F1 and F2) can modulate liver fatty acid (FA) profile and blood biomarkers. Liver content of α-linolenic acid was higher in animals always fed with LOW diet than animals that changed from CON to LOW diet, which by your time was higher than animals always fed with CON diet. Liver saturated FA concentration decreased in both groups from F1 to F2. In conclusion, both diets were efficient in decreasing the saturated FA liver content across generations, the LOW ratio diet was more effective in reducing blood triglycerides and non-esterified fatty acids, and there was a multigenerational effect of the LOW ratio... |
